Brickwork is one of the oldest construction techni Brickwork is one of the oldest construction techniques. The first was probably wood. In the form of living branches curved into a nest-like temporary shelter. Then as cut and dried timber jointed into permanent structures. Stone, cut into blocks and stacked in interlocking patterns is thousands of years old. And before that random pieces piled and corbelled into simple shelters. But brick seems to be a more industrialised material. Mud ones, reinforced with straw, are processed by shaping and sun-drying. Clay bricks are hardened by heat treatment. This brickwork is in Ghent. In Flanders and Holland you’ll find word-leading examples. Computer aided design and concealed stainless steel components, like mesh, rods and support-angles, were essential to construct this particular example.

Dublin’s docks are a matrix of wide, grid planned, roads for container trucks. But the Dublin Port Company is an oasis of small scale garden design. This sculpture symbolises the port’s global connections. You can see reflected in it the Authority’s building. A pure example of ‘70’s rigour. Boldly expressed concrete structure and veils of glass. Visit https://www.dublinport.ie/news/ to see how the Company supports students and champions safety. And there’s more…Dublin Port Company has started work on the Tolka Estuary Greenway, for cyclists and pedestrians. We applaud this as a company ourselves aiming to emit less carbon. Which is why we travel through the port instead of flying. Thanks to Irish Ferries and Stena Line.
Quiz time to all my followers ! Q: Which Chimney Quiz time to all my followers !

Q: Which Chimney is fake ?
*comment your answers (spoilers below)*

A: B - the chimney is made of plastic and doesn't have to align with the gable wall below, it's so light in weight.

Authenticity in architecture preserves cultural heritage, fostering a connection to history. It reflects honest craftsmanship, enhancing aesthetic appeal. Authentic spaces offer a unique sense of identity and character, promoting emotional resonance. This genuine approach ensures spaces are functional, meaningful, and sustainable, creating lasting value for generations.

Housebuilders faking chimneys lack architectural integrity, compromising design honesty and cultural significance. Authentic architecture reflects genuine craftsmanship and purpose.

If you don’t already know it….This one hour walk near Prestbury is mapped on slide 2. Easily accessible from either Withinlee Road or Chelford Road. Where you could park. All public foot path. We liked the shelter of the wood. And between showers delighted in rays beaming through branches above. Across the musical stream, amongst ferns and fronds, a secret leafy lane and gently sloping fields. A peaceful Trundl to restore perspective.
