Three ways to create an opening in stone. CORBEL. Three ways to create an opening in stone. CORBEL. Like a staircase upside down. Its stones are little cantilevers. The flow of force is downward. ARCH. The curved profile directs the downward force sideways. Then down the vertical sides. You'll often see a "keystone" at the centre. But that's no more or less important than any other in the curve. LINTEL. A beam. Meaning forces are stretching outward along the bottom and compressing along the top. Balanced in opposition. A stone lintel is deeper than a steel one. Because it's not as strong as steel when stretched. The beam transfers downward force from above to the posts. And down again.

And avoids loss of first floor space...by confining it to the existing stairwell. The room itself can be enabled by @telebeam_ltd Their innovative beam system is SO clever. Jackson Homes Cheshire:-One of the most professional and effective builders in my entire career. A pleasure to help Andy and Kerry on the stand again this year. See you all again at Harrogate!
